Police and the army moved in quickly to quell youth protests that had broken out in Kamwokya and Katwe over the cancellation of Bobi Wine’s music concerts.
Yesterday, Wednesday police stormed the Kyadondo East legislator’s One Love beach in Busalaba, Makindye division and fired tear gas and water to disperse his fans and supporters who had turned up for his annual concert.
The organisers and sound engineers were ordered to pull down the stage and all revellers blocked from accessing the venue. Police claimed Bobi Wine had failed to secure clearance from the relative authority, the inspector general of police and as such couldn't allow the concert to take place.
The decision by police to block Bobi Wine's concert didn't go down well with his youthful supporters. This morning, the angry youths blocked Old Kira road in Kamwokya and Katwe along Entebbe road and lit fire using old tyres and logs to express dissatisfaction with the police.
But the army and police deployed hurriedly to disperse the protesters and restore sanity. One of Bobi Wine's supporters defended the protest, saying government is discriminating Bobi Wine. He said government should let Bobi Wine to go about with his work, saying he is an artist who appeals to many.
Malik Lee, another youth in Kamwokya says it is unfair for police to allow Bobi Wine's nemesis Bebe Cool to perform and block Bobi Wine on the other hand. He says the unfair treatment of Bobi Wine will only spur more resentment towards government from his supporters. While Bobi Wine opposes Museveni's governance, Bebe Cool is a staunch supporter of the president and his NRM party.
“Music is his business. Allowing Bebe Cool to perform and then block a fellow musician is very unfair." said Malik.
Police has in the past months blocked at least six similar shows involving Bobi Wine.
