Kira road police division on Saturday evening shot dead a craftsman who attempted to chop off his son's head in Kyebando, a Kampala suburb.
Sulaiman Male, a resident of Kisasi in Kawempe division was shot dead by police after he allegedly grabbed his son Isamu Male, 5, from home in Kisalosalo, Kyebando.
He then forcefully gained access to his friend Ismail Ssesanga's home, where, he picked a machete, forcing all occupants of the house to flee but they quickly reported at the nearby police post.
After forcing their way into the house where he'd locked himself, police shot Male after he was found pinning down his son's head while holding a machete in the other hand.
Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says police's intention was to disable Male, but he died on the spot but the boy was freed.
"We have opened up inquiries into Male's intentions and shooting as well, all statements needed from the locals at the scene and his relatives have been taken by Kira road detectives," said Owoyesigyire.
The incident comes just weeks after a 22-year-old man Joseph Nuwashaba, a resident of Bushenyi district was arrested with a severed child's head wrapped in a box outside parliament premises in September, saying he was taking a gift to speaker Rebecca Kadaga.
