No new COVID-19 cases in Uganda on Saturday

All 1,408 samples tested on Saturday for coronavirus disease turned out negative at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI).

Of these samples tested, 483 were from the community while 925 were from drivers at the various border points. Currently, Uganda has 19 active cases - 3 at Mulago, 9 at Entebbe, 4 at Arua regional referral hospital, one at Jinja referral hospital, Masaka and Kabale regional referral hospitals both have a case each.

At least 46 patients have recovered from the coronavirus disease. 10 truck drivers (4) Tanzanian nationals and 6 Kenyan nationals have been returned to their respective countries.

To date, 20,329 samples have been tested in Uganda and a total of 1,616 contacts listed for followup. Of these 1,323 have completed the mandatory 14-day followup while 293 contacts to the previously confirmed positive cases are under follow up according to Dr Henry Mwebesa, director general Health Services.

Kenya’s cases rose to 343 after 7 new cases and Rwanda also registered 7 new cases to take its national tally to 183. 1,262 new cases and 51 new deaths were registered in Africa on Saturday to take the continent’s tally 31,102 cases and 1,379 total deaths. 9,530 patients have recovered from the disease.

Egypt recorded the continent’s most new infections and deaths at 227 and 13 respectively. Cameroon had 10 new deaths and 88 new cases while South Africa had 7 new deaths and 141 new cases. Algeria registered 4 new deaths and 129 new cases. Morocco had one new death and 139 new cases.

Nigeria registered 87 new cases and 3 deaths. Senegal had 69 new cases, Guinea 42 new cases, Tunisia 17 new cases. DR Congo cases rose to 417 after 22 new cases. Meanwhile, Somalia’s cases rose to 390 after 62 new cases and 2 new deaths were recorded on Saturday.

The United States of America (USA) once again recorded deaths in excess of 2,000 on Saturday. It had 2,055 new deaths and 35,293 new cases.

And like has been the trend for the last two weeks, the United Kingdom followed with the day’s highest new deaths at 813 and 4,913 new infections. Italy’s deaths seem to be rising again after 415 new deaths were registered on Saturday alongside 2,357 new cases. Spain had 378 new deaths, France 369, Brazil 375, Belgium 238, Mexico 152.

Equatorial Guinea had 44 new cases and Sudan 39 new cases and one new death while Liberia had 3 new deaths and 3 new cases. On the global scene, there are 2,918,934 confirmed cases, 203,139 deaths, and 836486 recoveries with active cases standing at 1,879,309. Of the 97 per cent have mild conditions while 58,178 (3 per cent) are in serious or critical conditions.
