Two people who were arrested for selling fake coronavirus vaccines have been released on bond.
Sayid Kayire and his Amiina Kayire were last week arrested and detained at Mayuge central police station after trading in fake coronavirus vaccines in Wante village, Imanyiro sub-county, Mayuge district in eastern Uganda.
Before their arrest, the suspects were allegedly distributing fake vaccines to unsuspecting residents who later on alerted police. The suspects are renowned herbalists who purchase local herbs from traditional healers before supplying them to different retailers operating along with the landing sites within Mayuge district.
According to a police statement, Amiina confessed to having distributed the fake herbs to solicit money from the public.
“The herbs were indeed meant for cough and flue but, I relabelled them with new item name coronavirus drug to earn more money from the public,” reads her statement in part.
James Mubi, the Busoga East Police spokesperson says that their investigations were closed on Monday after interrogating both suspects and victims.
“We concluded our investigations after interrogating all parties and the file was today handed over to the resident state attorney for perusal,” he says.
As different countries all over the world continue to contemplate on how to suppress coronavirus disease infections, Uganda has not registered any case and ministry of Health officials have resorted to sensitizing masses on preventive measures.
Such measures include; compulsory handwashing with soap, no handshaking or hugs, and compulsory use of sanitizers around public places, among others.
