There was a gunfire exchange between police and suspected thugs in Kitebi Zone in Rubaga Division in Kampala city in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
Police exchanged fire with the thugs during a botched raid on the home of Sarah Zziwa, the proprietor of Home Basket supermarket in Wankulukuku.
Police reportedly received prior information that a group of armed thugs had planned to stage a deadly raid on Zziwa’s home. The officers went ahead to stage an ambush for the thugs.
Robert Kaggwa, a boda boda rider at Wankulukuku stage and eye witness says the thugs arrived at around 4:00 am driving a G-touring vehicle and landed in the police ambush leading to a gunfire exchange. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango confirmed the incident.
“The thugs were driving a G-touring car red in colour with two different number plates UAE601S in front and UAE 050K behind,” he said.
Adding that, “When police started chasing them they ran away while shooting at the officers prompting them to respond.”
He, however, says police managed to deflate the tires of the suspect’s vehicle prompting them to abandon the vehicle at the crime scene.
“The vehicle was impounded and taken to Kabowa police station. Upon searching it, police officers found sharp objects that they normally use for breaking into buildings,” Onyango added.
He says they intended to obtain details of the vehicle from Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to find the thugs who are still at large.
